Why Do Older Computers Run Slower?

Older computers run slower because they are not optimally configured, as they once were when they were newly purchased.

As a computer is used, applications are installed, data files are created, and configuration changes are made -- all resulting in slow computer performance. The computer's original state is altered to no longer provide an optimal user experience. The older the computer, the more that computer will benefit from a PC Tune-Up.

Even newer computers, with fast processors and fast disk drives, will eventually start to run slow. Because of their faster components, newer computers will initially run well for a longer period of time, but eventually, they will also require a PC Tune-Up.

All computers can benefit from a PC Tune-Up, which includes the following tasks:

  • Check status of anti-virus software, and update when necessary
  • Identify and remove any computer virus, including all remnants
  • Review and optionally remove Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs)
  • Delete web browser tracking cookies
  • Review and configure web browser settings, including search engines and add-ons
  • Clear web browser history
  • Delete unneeded temporary files
  • Clear system and application cache
  • Streamline System Registry, by removing obsolete and inconsistent information
  • Download/install security and reliability updates
  • Optimize size of System Paging file
  • Defragment disk drive
